تخيّل ميزانًا عليه ثلاثة أكياس متساوية وخمس قطع، ويقابلها عشرون قطعة. لا تعرف ما في كل كيس، لكنك تستطيع معرفة ذلك إذا حافظت على توازن الميزان. إذا كان ٣س + ٥ = ٢٠، فما قيمة س؟ الخيارات: أ) ٣ ب) ٥ ج) ٧ د) ١٥.
لنعد إلى الميزان: حتى يبقى متساويًا، نفعل الشيء نفسه على الجانبين. نطرح ٥ من الطرفين، فتختفي الخمس الإضافية، ويصبح ٣س = ١٥. الآن نقسم الطرفين على ٣، لأن لدينا ثلاثة أكياس متساوية. هكذا نجد س = ٥، أي خمس قطع في كل كيس.
