تخيّل رسولين ينطلقان من المكان نفسه في اللحظة نفسها: أحدهما على دراجة، والآخر يمشي. أيهما يصل إليك أولًا؟ الآن انظر إلى السماء: ترى ومضة البرق، ثم تسمع دوي الرعد. لو حدثا معًا تقريبًا، فما الذي أخّر الصوت؟ هذه الثواني القليلة ليست خدعة من عينيك.
البرق تفريغ كهربائي يضيء السماء، ويسخّن الهواء حوله بسرعة. يتمدد الهواء فجأة، فتتكوّن موجة صوتية نسمّيها الرعد. مثل الرسولين، انطلق الضوء والصوت من الحدث نفسه، لكن الضوء يصل إلى عينيك أسرع بكثير مما يصل الصوت إلى أذنيك. لذلك تسبق الومضة الدوي.
يمكنك حتى استعمال هذا التأخر لتقدير بُعد العاصفة: إذا مرّت ثلاث ثوانٍ بين الومضة والدوي، فالبرق يبعد عنك نحو كيلومتر واحد. هذا تقدير، لا قياس دقيق. تذكّر الرسولين: خرجا معًا، ووصل الأسرع أولًا. لماذا نرى البرق قبل سماع الرعد؟ لأن الضوء يصل إلينا أسرع من الصوت.
