Picture this: you're hungry at a restaurant, but the kitchen door is locked. How do you get fed? You tell a waiter what you want. The waiter takes your order to the kitchen, then brings your meal back. No need to touch the stove.
An API works like that waiter. It's a set of rules for one app to ask another service for something. Your app sends a request in an agreed format, and the service sends a response. You get the result without seeing how the service makes it.
Your weather app can ask a weather service for today's forecast, then show its answer. Like the waiter, the API gives the app a way to ask without entering the kitchen. How do apps get answers from other services? An API lets them exchange requests and responses.
